Keanu Stingone quit club soccer at twelve years old. He was burned out — not from the sport itself, but from the pressure, the cost, the politics, and the relentless focus on winning at an age when kids should still be figuring out whether they even like the game.
Now 21, Stingone is the director of coaching at Youth 4 Youth FC, a peer-led youth soccer program built on a radical premise: that American youth soccer has its priorities exactly backwards, and that young coaches — people who remember what it felt like to be a burned-out twelve-year-old — might be the ones best positioned to fix it.
Youth 4 Youth FC trains young coaches — ages 16 to 22 — to lead sessions for younger players. The result is a coaching relationship that feels less like authority and more like mentorship. Kids respond differently to someone who was recently in their shoes. The power dynamic shifts. The conversation opens up.
The program's founders — including Brando Babini, who played professionally and worked with Landon Donovan's youth development initiatives — argue that the American club soccer model selects for families who can afford it, not athletes who will thrive. The result is a pipeline that burns through kids before they're old enough to drive.
"We're asking eight-year-olds to specialize, twelve-year-olds to commit year-round, and then wondering why we have a burnout problem by high school."
The Youth 4 Youth model is a reminder that the most important question isn't "Is my child getting better?" It's "Does my child still love this?" Programs that prioritize development over results, and relationships over rankings, are the ones that keep kids in the game long enough for the real growth to happen.
